UniFi vs. eero for a Small Office
Updated
Which one fits a small office?
For an office of roughly 5 to 30 people, choose UniFi when you need configurable network separation and someone can own the setup. Choose eero when app-based management and a staff network with separate guest access meet your needs.
How are they managed?
UniFi Network, the controller, runs on a UniFi OS console such as a Cloud Gateway or CloudKey, or on your own server. Official UniFi Hosting is another option. With a local controller, you can manage it locally through its IP address.
eero is cloud-managed through its mobile app, with the network checking in with eero's cloud. Decide who holds administrative access and who handles changes before installing either system.
What network features matter for an office?
UniFi supports VLANs assigned to wifi networks and switch ports. Use these for staff, guests, and cameras, then configure isolation and gateway firewall rules around permitted traffic. UniFi Cloud Gateways combine the controller and gateway; a CloudKey can manage equipment alongside a separate router.
eero offers a separate guest network. Its optional eero Business subscription adds multiple network names (SSIDs) on compatible hardware. It does not work in bridge mode; check the other requirements before subscribing.
Prefer wired access points where cabling is practical. UniFi supports wireless meshing, but each wireless hop reduces available throughput. eero supports wired or wireless backhaul; models without Ethernet ports cannot be wired.
UniFi PoE switch ports supply power to compatible devices. eero also offers a PoE Gateway combining a wired router and PoE switch. Check power requirements and port counts before ordering.
eero includes a firewall and lets you block individual devices, except in bridge mode. For UniFi, per-device VLAN assignments and isolation provide controls over device access. Test required printer access and guest isolation after configuration.
What does each cost to run?
UniFi has no required subscription for its core self-hosted controller; Official UniFi Hosting is paid. eero has optional subscriptions, including eero Plus and eero Business. Compare hardware, cabling, installation, administration, and the subscription features you actually need.
When should you switch?
Assess a change when dead spots interrupt work, many devices compete during busy periods, or you need separate guest, staff, and camera networks. Count devices, map cable runs, and test the busiest rooms first. Assign someone to maintain the configuration, document access rules, and handle updates before choosing replacements.
What else should you know?
Does eero need wireless backhaul?
No. Models with Ethernet ports can use wired backhaul. Check the exact model before buying equipment for existing cable runs.
Does UniFi require a monthly controller subscription?
No. The core self-hosted controller is license-free; budget separately for hardware, maintenance, and any paid hosting you choose.
Should we replace everything to fix a dead spot?
First test coverage, access point placement, and the connection between access points. Replace equipment when those checks show the current setup cannot meet your coverage or separation requirements.
